EM 501 Management Accounting and Engineering Economics (3-0)3

Purpose of accounting for planning and control. Basic accounting concepts, techniques and conventions. Understanding corporate annual reports: Balance Sheet, Income Statement, Consolidated Financial Statements, Cash Flow Statement, Flow of Funds Statement. Price level adjusted financial statements. Analysis of financial statements; ratio analysis. Cost-volume-profit analysis. Classification of costs; relating to income measurement, to profit planning, and for control, manufacturing accounts, and the valuation of stocks. Job costing, process costing, activity based costing, standard costing . Budgeting, a systemic approach to planning and control.

EM 502 Operations Management (3-0)3

Design and planning decisions requiring long-term commitments: planning the location of a facility, product planning, process selection and design, capacity planning, facility layout planning. Operation and control: supply chain management, forecasting, aggregate planning, inventory management, MRP, JIT, scheduling, project management.

EM 503 Systems and Organizations (3-0)3

The systems approach; systems thinking and managerial processes; different perspectives of organization as a system; environment and boundary of organizations; organizational structure and effectiveness; fundamental managerial functions related to planning, organizing, deciding and controlling; goals, power and control; systems-oriented analytic approaches to the problem-solving aspects of management; culture as a systemic tool and organizational learning.

EM 504 Technology Management (3-0)3

Definition of technology concept in production and service sectors. History of technological developments on a sectoral basis. Relationships with science and engineering. Models for technology development: techno-parks, science parks, research institutes. Organizations and media toward technology surveys and technology transfer. Role of technology in national economic development and global competition.

EM 505 Decision Models (3-0)3

Introduction to the methodology of deterministic decision models. Kuhn-Tucker conditions of optimality. Linear programming using the simplex method. Duality theory. The dual simplex method and post optimality analysis. Parametric linear programming. The transportation algorithm. Transshipment and assignment problems. Integer programming models and an introduction to enumerative algorithms. Dynamic programming.

Introduction to quality concept, review of total quality in organizations, quality philosophies and quality management award frameworks, customer satisfaction and itsmeasurement, leadership, strategic planning, seven management and planning tools,the scope of human resource management and its role in a total quality management,product design and proces management, performance measurement, the cost of quality, managing and using performance data, statistical methods in quality management,management models for quality improvement, six-sigma, designing the quality control system and statistical process control.

EM 508 Strategic Planning (3-0)3

Equip students with concepts that would enable them to develop competitive strategies for all types and sizes of organizations. It consists of methods and techniques of formulation, implementation and evaluation of strategies that enable an organization to achieve its mission and objectives. The main topics covered are: Strategic Analysis; environmental analysis, resource analysis, and culture and stakeholder analysis, competitor analysis, Strategic Choice and Strategy Implementation Process, Strategy Review, Evaluation and Control.

EM 509 Strategy and Structure of Cooperation (3-0)3

This course will cover the following topics: overview of firm external cooperation and networking, business strategy in networks, business relationships and actors in networks, network structures, strategic alliances, supply chains, production networks, innovation networks, strategic networks, clusters and network competences.

EM 510 Business Process Reengineering (3-0)3

The course concentrates on how to achieve and sustain high levels of performance improvement by focusing on processes and people as parts of organizational structures and systems. Emphasis is on fundamental redesign of strategic and value-adding business processes. Strategic change management appears as a tool from functionally divided traditional organizational structures to process-based structures.

EM 512 Qualitative Methods for Management (3-0)3

Qualitative research methods serving as means to understand complex social systems. Models and techniques employed for gaining a better understanding and change of human interactions: structured interviewing and observation, qualitative performance evaluation in organizations and Delphi technique, system dynamics as a semi-qualitative method for simulation.

Physical distribution, after-sale services (product repair and maintenance), procurement, logistic performance and cost control, and logistic concepts of product systems design. Overview of material Handling. Packaging facilities repair and maintenance and automation in logistics.

A review of quantitative microeconomics theory covering demand, production and market structures. A selection of medium-to-long term issues such as competition and pricing. Concepts of equilibrium and welfare. Modern topics in industrial economics such as the transaction cost and property rights approaches and government regulation.

This course is mainly concerned with economic analysis for engineering and managerial decision making. It consists of techniques for evaluating the worth of prospective projects, investment oppurtunities and design choices. The main topics covered are: Interest and time value of money, economic equivalence, nominal and effective rates, methods for evaluating alternatives, and replacement analysis, before and after tax analysis, index numbers, inflation and escalating costs, sensitivity analysis and how methods of financing affects the analysis. Deterministic capital budgeting models.

EM 532 Finance for Engineering Management (3-0)3

The primary objective of this course is to familiarize the student with fundamental concepts of financial management, including the objectives, tasks and decisions made by financial managers. Fundamental concepts such as asset valuation, market efficiency, risk and return analysis, bond and stock valuation, asset pricing models and cost of capital will be covered. This course will allow students of Engineering Management to gain a basic understanding of how financial management decisions are taken in organizations and be able to incorporate this into their actions
